Shifting ground
The
movement-based interactive installation Shifting
Ground invites the visitor to activate, select,
and alter pre-recorded video dance sequences of
three dancers worlds. The videos
are based on each dancers memories,
and qualitative descriptions of movement efforts
(time, space, weight, flux) associated with their
dance practices from different geographic homelands:
Qing Fang (China), Kossua Ghiamphy (Ivory Coast)
and Mia Keinanen (Finland). This work focused on
how movement qualities were referentially informed
in their environment, histories and geographies.
Shifting Ground translates the dancers
descriptions of movement efforts into a visual and
kineasthetic participatory mise-en-scène
or movement installation. Interactive videos create
a kinaesthetic and tactile and contagious
quality of cinema as something we viewers brush
up against like another body. (Marks 2000:
